New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin look to other nations for
help in rebuilding his hurricane-damaged city. -
Good news (perhaps) regarding our previous story on Diebold's
refusal to allow the voters of Alaska to look at their
own voting data since the Electronic Voting Machine vendor
claimed the file format of their GEMS tabulation software
was a "company secret" in their contract with
the state. - Bradblog.com
More than 30 million Americans will be looking at new
and unfamiliar voting machines when they cast their ballots
this year, perhaps the most rapid changeover of voting
equipment in history. With that change comes an increased
risk of errors and confusion, election officials say.

Two recent polls, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll and
a New York Times/CBS News poll, indicate why Bush is getting
away with impeachable offenses. Half of the US population
is incapable of acquiring, processing and understanding
information. - Paul Craig Roberts
A number of readers have asked me when did I undergo my
epiphany, abandon right-wing Reaganism and become an apostle
of truth and justice. I appreciate the friendly sentiment,
but there is a great deal of misconception in the question.

Despite opposition from some of their colleagues, 86 evangelical
Christian leaders have decided to back a major initiative
to fight global warming, saying "millions of people
could die in this century because of climate change, most
of them our poorest global neighbors." - NYTimes.com
There aren’t many elected officials
in Washington who want to throw the gantlet down on
Iran more than Hillary Clinton. The New York Senator
believes the president has been too soft on the militant
Islamic country, claiming that Bush has played down
the threat of a nuclear-armed Tehran.Sen. Clinton has
attempted to out-hawk Dubya on other foreign policy
matters, as well -Joshua Frank/LewRockwell.com
Right now, the 2008 election shapes
up like this. The Republican frontrunners are Senator
John McCain (Az.) and Senator George Allen (Va.). McCain
is ahead of Allen. Giuliani is running third, quite
far back.Hillary Clinton is the Democratic favorite
with Governor Mark Warner (Va.) running a distant second. The
Republicans are slight favorites to retain the White
House. All these rankings are from Tradesports contracts

Just before Christmas, two of the world's
most venerable legislative bodies engaged in erudite,
impassioned debate over what the right balance should
be between the imperatives of national security and
international prohibitions on torture. They arrived
at starkly divergent conclusions that reveal the depth
of damage the war on terror is doing to this country's
civil liberties -Alfred W. McCoy/TomDispatch.com
The CIA's top counterterrorism officer
was relieved of his position yesterday after months
of turmoil atop the agency's clandestine service, according

spent most of his career undercover overseas, took charge
of the Counterterrorism Center about a year ago after
a series of senior jobs at the center of the Bush administration's
national security agenda -Washington Post
It's one of the Kabuki rituals of Washington.
Each year, a few days after the President's State of
the Union address, the commander in chief submits his
proposed budget to Congress. TV cameras show the phone
book-thick documents coming off the government printing
press. The party in opposition denounces the budget
as reckless while the administration in power proclaims
it tough but thoughtful, perfect for a changing world(Consider
the source and see the next story up) -Matthew Cooper/Time
The National Guard and Reserves will
play a much smaller role next year in Iraq and Afghanistan,
dropping to less than one-fifth of overall U.S. forces
