A provision in the "PATRIOT Act" creates a new
federal police force with the power to violate the Bill
of Rights. You might think that this cannot be true, as
you have not read about it in newspapers or heard it discussed
by talking heads on TV. - Paul Craig Roberts
Back 2001 and 2002, in the southeast corner of London,
a gang of thieves defrauded dealers of Jaguars, Mercedes,
and BMWs by hijacking someone else's identity and using
that information to make loan-free car purchases. In the
end, it was the presence of several high-end cars parked
in a relatively poor neighborhood that led authorities
to raid one of the addresses there. The incriminating
evidence they found at the scene? An iPod crammed with
stolen identities and contact information of criminal
associates. - CNET.com
KBR, the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton
Co. (HAL) , said Tuesday it has been awarded a contingency
contract from the Department of Homeland Security to supports
its Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in
the event of an emergency. The maximum total value of
the contract is $385 million and consists of a 1-year
base period with four 1-year options. KBR held the previous
ICE contract from 2000 through 2005. The contract, which
is effective immediately, provides for establishing temporary
detention and processing capabilities to expand existing
ICE Detention and Removal Operations Program facilities
in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into
the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs,
KBR said. The contract may also provide migrant detention
support to other government organizations in the event
of an immigration emergency, as well as the development
of a plan to react to a national emergency, such as a
natural disaster, the company said. - Marketwatch.com
The Defense Department has scheduled a second major, three-day
exercise to combat nuclear terrorism in the Charleston,
S.C. area. The goal is not prevention, but coping with
the catastrophic results of a terrorist nuclear attack
on a major U.S. port city. - WorldNetDaily
It will be interesting to see who Syria
fears most - the militias that triumphed over Israeli
military might or the US forces that might have been
defeated in Iraq.-Paul Craig Roberts
Stretched by frequent troop rotations
to Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army has become a "thin
green line" that could snap unless relief comes soon,
according to a study for the Pentagon.-AP
The United States was accused of "gangster
tactics" yesterday, and European governments were accused
of turning a blind eye to the "outsourcing of torture",
as a human rights watchdog concluded that the CIA conducted
illegal anti-terror activities in Europe.Dick Marty,
a Swiss parliamentarian conducting a formal inquiry,
said evidence pointed to a system of "relocation" of
torture of terror suspects, and that reliable indications
suggested secret interrogation centres may have existed

Now the NSA is being roiled by political
controversy over charges that it is illegally eavesdropping
on Americans. President Bush is scheduled to visit the
agency Wednesday as part of a week-long effort to defend
a program the administration claims is both legal and
crucial in the fight against terror. If nothing else,
the uproar is adding another chapter to the history
of an arm of the government that has been derided and
lauded by turns ever since the US government first publicly
acknowledged its existence -Christian Science Monitor
After wading through all the publications
and websites representing both support and opposition
for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-approved
by the U.S. Congress July 2005), it's astonishing to
realize how very few of them bother to explain the legal
foundation for the agreement. CAFTA, like most international
trade agreements, is based entirely in the supremacy
of communitarian law(internal link to Part 2) -Niki

Sustainable Development seeks the restructure
of human nature. Like communism, it relies on a system
of social justice that works to abolish private property
in order to pursue the “common good.” The pursuit of
a centrally determined “common good” ultimately requires
the force of a police state to suppress individual freedoms
-Michael Shaw/NewsWithViews
Timothy Geithner, president of the
New York Federal Reserve, on Monday dismissed the view
that the US current account deficit was sustainable,
suggesting the risk of a sudden fall in the dollar would
grow the longer the trade gap widened. His warning came
as Raghuram Rajan, chief economist at the International
Monetary Fund, repeated his concern over the risk of
a run on the dollar -Financial Times UK
Online search engine leader Google
Inc. has agreed to censor its results in China, adhering
to the country's free-speech restrictions in return
for better access in the Internet's fastest growing
market.-AP
